Authors Statement

Overall, this course has taught me numerous things. From writing different genres, to learning more about my major, to opening as a writer, I have learned a lot. During the discussions, the essays, the projects, the writing in this course has made me become a stronger writer. When the photo essays were presented to us as a project, I was nervous. I thought “how am I going to represent my major with pictures”? I thought about it and came up with a few ideas. This project also taught me that. Writing through photos is a beautiful process, because when you’re able to put your own examples and thoughts into photos and describe them is very interesting. When reading others photo essays and evaluating, they showed a lot about that individual. Seeing other people’s work was unique and showed a lot about my classmates. Some of the frequent genres I used were simple essays. I liked writing large papers on a block essentially what an essay is because I feel like I go more in depth with the writing just being able to freely write what’s on my mind. With learning each task throughout this course, I feel like could help me and my major because I wrote a lot about Real Estate and found out more and more each time, I wrote about it. This already helped me and can lead to more help in the future because the more I write about Real Estate, the more interest grows and the more research I end up having to do. This could help me also because the more I find out, the more I will know and can use that knowledge when I land a Real Estate job. Writing doesn’t factor much within Real Estate, but it can help opening more when talking to my clients and eventually help me become more of a talkative, wiser person. I really enjoyed taking this class and all the work I did in it. This class opens you up as a writer and should have more credit to it. I look back at my old writings and see a drastic difference between the two.

Term Project Assignment

This assignment consists of interviews and bibliographies that relate to my major. My major is Real Estate. I interviewed 4 agents that all have the same job title, Leasing Agents. Three out of the four work at a small company called Vinebrook Homes. This company originated in Cincinnati, OH and is expanding to more states. I worked with this company because my mom is a Leasing Agent there and gave me the easy access to interview her co-workers. I enjoyed talking to the agents because it gave me an insight of my future job title, I’ll have soon.

The person I chose to interview would be one of my mom’s coworkers. Her coworkers name is Megan. My mom and Megan have worked together for about a year now. They both do the same job as a leasing agent, but my mom is the “Senior Leasing Agent”.

ME: What’s a day in your job like?

MS: Hectic. I wake up with my day already planned. I typically have appointments every 30 minutes scheduled ahead of time. Showing houses, doing lease signings. After my field work, I stop into the office turn in paperwork, turn in money, and catch up on leases.

ME: Okay, so is it challenging having back-to-back appointments.

MS: Yes, because people are not on time for their appointments and take no consideration of how close it is.

ME: What do you do if their running late?

MS: I give them a 15-minute grace period, if they cannot make it, then they must reschedule.

ME: What made you pick this career?

MS: It picked me.

ME: Do you regret going into this field?

MS: No not at all.

ME: What’s your favorite part about your job?

MS: Meeting new people. The flexibility is very nice too. I like the money. I make great money. Making my own schedule is very convenient. The challenge of me meeting my monthly goals is also very intense I love it.

ME: Awesome. You seem to really like your job. That’s always good when you like your job, so it gives you the benefit of wanting to go every day. Thanks for your time.

The second person I chose to interview is my mom. My mom has worked in the Real Estate business for about 10 years. She always debated going through Real Estate or something else. But she found her calling and it was Real Estate. She works for a company called Vinebrook Homes that’s located out of Dayton, OH. My mom has record breaking sales as a leasing agent. She sells a house every time she goes out. The tension levels in our own business.

ME: What does your day look like as a Realtor?

KG: Well, I wake up get on the computer to see what showings and move ins I have, look at any emails, look through my voicemails, collect any data I missed so I can start calling the people back to set up any future appointments. Then after, I head out to my first appointment and on with my day. My day is the same each day. I go to the houses, show them, they apply if they wish, and then move on from there. I feel like my day is a little more different than Realtors at a bigger company like Sibcy Cline etc. I’m a leasing agent so I have more of a flexible schedule, and I run how I do things. I don’t necessarily have to follow major rules when renting a house to an individual.

ME: Wow, that’s nice you’re able to have so much free time during your work. So, tell me more about your scheduling as a leasing agent.

KG: Well what specifics do you want?

ME: I guess how do you fit in time for your family and your work. Are you able to just call off whenever or do you have to verify it with someone higher?

KG: Well, a little bit of both. So yeah, I make my own schedule, but I do indeed have to go over it with Jeff, my boss to make sure I’m 100% allowed to. Typically, when I have some down time through the day and I’m over by my daughter’s house, Kaitlyn, I’ll go and visit her and my two grandkids. In my free time I do anything I please that will make my day easier and fly by. Typically for like vacations, I request that time off because that’s more time off rather than just a day.

ME: That’s amazing. I love the fact that you can just do whatever you want during work hours. Okay, do you work from home or do you go to a more office professional setting?

KG: Both. I work from home when I don’t have showings. I update a lot of my client’s intel in the database. Every Sunday, I must go through the files and run the numbers to make sure everything is in place and everything matches with one another. The days I go to the office are usually only when I need a set of keys, turn in money/ money orders, sign a lease, or just sit down and go through of course more files.

ME: Ha-ha, that’s nice you don’t have to sit behind a desk and have to office job label to you. Anyways, thank you for your time and completing this interview with me!

With the second round of interviews, they have more in-depth questions. In these interviews I asked both Relators the same questions and their responses were fairly the same. When you type these interviews from two different people, it’s interesting how their answers either play out to be the same or are completely different. This oversees the type of similarities and differences each employee has in the same work environment.

With these interviews, I put them together instead of a written-out script. I’m going to state the question and summarize their answer.

The first person I interviewed was Tony. Tony has worked at Vinebrook Homes and works along my mom as well. Tony has been in the Real Estate field for about 5 years now and counting. Tony has worked at Vinebrook for only about 7 months. Tony has a variety of experience in this field and has made a phenomenal impact to the Business community. The questions I asked Tony were:

  • What sets you apart from other agents here?
  • What’s your marketing plan for the houses you rent?
  • If someone were to choose you as their agent, what’s the first thing you do to get started?
  • How do you handle prep work and staging?
  • How many homes do you rent a month?
  • What has been your favorite selling experience?
  • How to do you manage both in- and out-of-office tasks?

I thought these were great in-depth questions to ask these two Realtors. My last interview questions, I was new to the idea and didn’t really have open minded questions that made the interviewers think. With these questions, I could tell somewhat a struggle they had and were really thinking before answering. From Tony, her answers were so in depth and great with the details. A summary of her answers are below.

What sets me apart is that I’m available more than most agents. I take my time to meet with the prospect and make the sales. I am more helpful than the other agents when it comes to getting someone to apply. I take their applications over the phone. I want people to feel more comfortable with me as their agent. A lot of the other agents are more like do the application online and I’ll let you know when I get it. I’m more persuasive when it comes to client when it comes to the sale. My marketing plan for the house I rent is number 1. I print the show list every morning. I check our company website to make sure each house that I’m assigned is marketed on the website with pictures and great verbiage. After, I go onto Facebook marketplace; I make sure my assigned houses are marketed in there as well. After I check Facebook Marketplace, I go to each house that I’m assigned to and make sure there is a sign in the yard. While I’m at the house, I take fresh pictures of the house incase they’re needed. After I do that, I check and make sure how long the houses have been on the market and see if a price reduction is needed. I make sure there is also any deposit specials to get people moved in right asway. If someone were to choose me as their agent the first thing, I do is make them do their application, ID, and background check. If approved, then we schedule to tour the house. When it comes to prep work, I make sure to have the lease documents available with me for the person to sign in case they want to move forward in getting the house the same day. I always have signs in my car so any house can be advertised with a yard sign. I have all keys with me available. I provide a move in cost sheet, so the clients know how much it is to move in. I rent about 30 homes a month. My favorite selling experience was being acknowledged for professionalism, and that I know how to help people find the perfect house for them and their family. In office tasks, I go in I scan documents, turn in files, money, speak with management about the weeks for me and the ither agents to make sure were meeting our goals for the week.

The next person I interviewed was Nick. Nick works at a small company called Uptown Small Rentals. Nick has worked here for about 2 years and has been in the Real Estate field for about 10 years. Nick is a leasing agent that rents out properties up in the Clifton area. Nick mostly works with college students that attend UC. Nick provided his questions below to the same questions I have above.

This a small business so each agent typically has the same job/ requirement. I feel as if I am different from the other agents because I know we deal with college students and face a lot of problems, but this is a rental that they are going to be living in for their semester of college. Why move them into something you know they will be miserable un when they already must deal with school? I want all my clients to be happy in their apartment, home, etc. A little bit of my marketing plans is to make sure the rentals are ready to move in. The tenants are happy with their rental. I make sure they have their deposits, application approval, and show them the area surrounding them in case they are unfamiliar with it. I typically to a variety of walk throughs with the rentals to make sure everything is intact. I handle the prep work well. I have the walk-through sheets ready, the lease ready, and any other important paperwork included that the tenants either need or need to sign and agree to the terms and conditions. I typically rent about 15-20 houses out each month. My goal is to get 20 to have my statistics to look good. One of my favorite selling experiences is seeing the clients happy in their rental. I do not have a specific moment that is one of my favorites. Just knowing that my prospect is moved in without any worries or doubts, makes it the best part of it all. In office work is mostly paperwork and turning in any important documents to the management team. I usually go into office to get the keys, any missing paperwork I might have not grabbed, the lease documents, etc. Out of office is going in out of the properties, renting them, showing them, etc.

Overall, these last two interviews were more educated and accommodated to the question I asked. Most of their answers were the same. Tony went into a lot of depth about each question. I liked the thought process of each question and how she took the time to describe each answer and went into detail. The job she has fits her well and she is a great co-worker others have said.

With my career being Real Estate what really got me interested was looking at all the different houses. I have a fascination with different houses and all the unique features that comes with all the houses. My mom always worked in some sort of housing when I grew up and I always look up to my mom. She would allow me to go to all her showings and lease signings and that always was an interest for me. My overall perception of Real Estate is good. Everything about Real Estate interests me. The going out meeting different people looking for homes that make them happy. This perception was built of me as a person. I enjoy doing things for people and see them happy. I think the most beautiful thing to see is a bright smile on a happy face. Buying a house is a huge step in a person’s life and I know once those keys are in their hand, a smile and breach of happiness is attained. When I graduate college, I hope to get a job in the field working for one of the bigger companies of Real Estate. Then eventually later when I have enough experience and background, I want to start my own company.

Genre Analysis Gallery

Real Estate Business Cards | Zazzle.com
The first text that I decided to pick was a Business Card. Business Cards are a very important object in the Real Estate world. Business Cards have the ability to maintain the realtor contact information so they can keep in touch and follow up with one another. Business Cards have the setting factor that appears as a personal indicator that helps get in touch with realtors. The address establishing business and to keep close contact to get the answers they need. Mostly realtors use the cards to have their name put out there. The purpose of the cards are to have the realtors information out there so they get known and hopefully more cliental. This leans more towards logos because it puts the logic out there to to get the point of why business cards are so important for realtors to have. The format of these would most definitely be professional. There are cards that have fun cute decor sides to them, but as far as it’s logic side, they are professional.
10 Free Real Estate Spreadsheets - Real Estate Finance | Spreadsheet, Real estate career, Real estate
Spreadsheets are important in the field of Real Estate. These spreadsheets are normally used to. have the certain things of a house written down. They usually have the price of the house, the utilities, the # of bedrooms and baths. Just a full list of things. This genre is used when the client wants basic information on a certain house. It addresses the necessities the house comes with. People use this genre when they need to know what their house has in it before wanting to follow through with their decision. Usually there is only one person who write this spreadsheet and its usually the realtor of the house they’re addressed to. Again, logos is the best one to describe this situation. The logic of knowing the house will make the job easier. The format of spreadsheets are typically inna spreadsheet with each column lists out as a part if the house and what is has. Most of the sentences here aren’t long. Not even really sentences just descriptions. This is pretty much formal in every sense as it is just actions about each aspect listed.
Rent-to-Own Agreement | Create a Free Lease-to-Own Lease Agreement
The lease agreement is the last step of the purchasing step. The lease is the most important thing in buying or renting a home because it’s agreement and signing what you’re able to do as a buyer and responsibilities and liabilities as a home owner. This is used when purchasing the home. This is written up then signed by the owners. The agreement to this home is the topics and issues used to discuss the long term. The realtors use this genre to contract the agreement. The purpose of this lease is to indicate between the buyers and the real estate company understanding the important points of the final decision made on the home. Logo and Ethos would make the most sense with this genre. Everything with this genre would be describe as formal and very important. Formal wording professional look and signed.

Real Estate Works

This here is one of my moms show list for her houses she has assigned to her. This list has the houses divided to each agent. It has the information for each house that’s needed to let the agent know what information each house has.
This is a lockbox on one of my moms houses. This represents the vacancy of the house and to enter the home we have to be able to unlock the house to show the property.
Keys to the house. When the tenant signs the lease, the keys are then handed to them and the home is finally theirs!
Me actually putting a sign in the yard. This also could represent the vacant of the property and allows others to know that the house is available and ready to rent.
One of the vacant houses I took a picture of. This house was one of my moms property. This house was vacant and its one that ready to rent.

Reflection

It was fairly a easy experience for me. I’ve been going to most of my moms showings ever since I was little. It’s always been a part of my life and it’s very enjoyable to be able to already have a lot of experience in this field. Taking this photos were a bit appealing because looking back on the photos, you can see the difference between real life and a snapshot of the photo. I think that visual literacy is less depth than textual literary because you only see the photo of what they’re capturing. Text, the artist can go more into depth about the photo and explains more detail about what the photo or anything is about. You can list out the date, the location, and the moral behind the photo. so think with mine since we were assigned to do both visual and text, it combine well because the photo was later on described with the captions I wrote out. My photo essay fits with my academic discourse because it was based on your major. My major is business real estate and these photos and caption were well put together along the lines of Real Estate.

Interview #2

The person I chose to interview would be one of my moms coworkers. Her coworkers name is Megan. My mom and Megan have worked together for about a year now. They both do the same job as a leasing agent, but my mom is considered to be the “Senior Leasing Agent”.

MS: I give them a 15 minute grace period, if they cannot make it, then they have to reschedule.

ME: What made you pick this career?

MS: It picked me.

Blog #22

Dear future writer,

Before this English class, I never heard of a “Theory of Writing”. I always took writing as if it was just another writing assignment I had to accomplish to get a grade in the class. I never had a specific audience or genre picked out for those assignments. I only ever thought “Okay my teacher will only be reading this, so just make it seem formal and do as the assignement asks”. As I continued to write, I checked off each checkpoint. I remember just wanting the paper to be finished. I never had to write more than 2 page papers in high school. So, I thought that was the limit of most, until I got to college. I had a very small interest in writing, but nothing whereas I thought I would need to continue it throughout my college years. I didn’t think even a English class would be neccesary for a Business Degree. But, I was wrong. Writing class will always appear in your major, no matter which major you pick.

In English 1001, you find your Theory of Writing. You find that you’re capable of just writing 1-2 pages. You find that writing can be more than just an assigned task to you. Each person in this class has found their true self with finding their own Theory of Writing. They found out what writing means to them and their strongest suits in writing. This class has taught me that there are specific details in writing rather than just words on a paper turning into your Professor. Finding your Theory of Writing comes from what you believe in, what you think when you write, how you process each piece of writing. Personally, my Theory of Writing is a composition of Genre and Audience Without these 2 major components in my writing, my papers would be scattered all over the place. Addressing points not relating to certain topics, and variations of different audiences throughout. “Writing cannot be put into words to describe what it’s all about. There are many ways to present writing. Writing can be emotional, personal experiences, funny, or anything an individual feels that they can be able to write. There’s always a purpose in writing and goals different writers choose to prosper, and that’s the beautiful thing in papers and essays. A writing with a goal or purpose in it, will be able to prosper higher than those who don’t. Pieces of writing should specifically have an audience, genre, and rhetorical situation”.

I was stuck on Major Assignment 1. This was the first big project and I didn’t know where to start. I read the checklist, and saw it had to be a 7-8 page paper. I read that direction about 30x before even beginning my paper. I was so lost and confused on how I was going to be able to manage such a heavy assignment. I went for the first meeting with my Professor and she then explained to me. I needed to pick a specific audience. I needed to find the reason for writing this paper. I needed a genre. Again, I didn’t know all that stuff was even important in writing. I didn’t think any of that would matter. But, it did. I sat down thinking. I thought of all the possible combinations of genres, and who I would want to write to. Who would want to read my writing and who would possibly be able to relate back to my writing. “Audience and Genre are so important in a writing piece. We now know more about each of these components we can put them into our writing without confusing the reader. Each factor is important to have in your writing because it explains the overflow of your writing and can allow the reader to fully understand the point of view as if they were the writer. Audience is important to acknowledge because you want to have a goal in mind to achieve so the reader can understand. Genre is when you pick a point of view of what you’re writing and present it all on paper. Rhetorical Situation is a group stimulated process where you”. This was a piece taken from Major Assignment 1 that was my ending statement. I believed after reading all the articles about each component that why both genre and audience are key factors to individuals writings.

My Theory of Writing can be applied to other circumstances rather than just writing. Anything you do creates an audience. Even if it’s just you, you are your own audience. For instance, if you are out buying clothes the audience would be either whoever you’re shopping with or the worker in the store asking you if you need assistance with anything. People never have taken this perspective before and turned it into reality. Nobody thinks about an audience with any small thing they do. Genres can vary a bit different from and audience. In a way, most people tend to do things accordingly to what they want to do. What they need to do. This specific genre would be their wants and needs. “This lets the reader understand the depth level of why the writer is writing the way they are or why they’re writing a certain piece”. I also wrote this in my Assignment 1. This is a perfect example about why people do certain things they do. This genre aspect puts vision into those who have no idea why they do certain things, but can imply a genre to that difficult scenario.

I plan to use these key components and relate them to my daily life and future papers. These are very important to know and to continue to study and grow from. Everything has a reason behind it and these will continue to recur in daily life in and out of the classroom. As my major in Business/ Real Estate, I will for sure have to pick a specific purpose and audience for each house. I will have to make sure the right family (audience) fits the perfect house that will meet their standards/ needs (genre).

Sincerely,

In episode 13, we can see the when Tim visits Kentaro. Kentaro is a designer who is always so serious, superstition, and always wants to get straight to the point. When Tim visit, we see that Kentaro only wants business. He gets straight to the point. So many ideas flow through his mind and puts them all into one design. Me as a writer, I tend to do this a lot. I get a topic to write about, and boom ideas start to flow. One after one. I tend to have so many ideas and don’t want to lose them, so I try to combine them all and put them into writing. Kentaro has all these images and designs in his head of the perfect look, so here we can see he decided to put them all together. Tim tends to see this and seems very confused onto what look Kentaro is trying to present. “I found a dead cat on the street, so after I buried the cat, I put my ear into the ground and this is the kind of sound I heard.” This is a quote from Kentaro he says and tells Tim this is his inspiration. Kentaro seems to have more of a darker personality, but also can be very bubbly and optimistic about a lot of things. I also find myself in this situation a lot as well.

Some similarities between the work of a writer and a designer is their imagination. A designer has to have a this in order to se their mind to think about the designs they’re going to make on clothes. They have to imagine what their print will look like on a certain shirt, pant, outfit, etc. Some people don’t have this, they can’t or are unable to think about certain situations that need to be thought out. Writers especially need this because they have to write about their thoughts, what they’re imagining. They combine all their thoughts onto paper instead of clothes. Another similarity in both work would be the process of the final product. I believe both of these perspectives need time. Time is the essential part of a perfect product. With time, the window space between the beginning to the end, the development process is between. Time is very fragile in both of these fields of work. Some differences would be the creativity. I believe designers tend to have more creative minds than writers. Designers can get pretty funky with their clothing lines and that’s what makes it a fun time for them. With them allowing their free spirits to roar, these designers ideas scatter and become a sunshine of colors, patterns, shapes, etc. A writer definitely has creativity. But, their creativity is more intellectual. They have more of this thinking process because they know writing a book is being written to teach the reader something. The main purpose of a writer is to teach. A writer has a speciifc genre an audience their aiming for. What they write about, will be known to point out those specific people. The specific genre will be introduced on the first page. Designers don’t have this. They definitely have an audience picked out, but a genre? No, their genre is clothes. As we can see if Project Runway, their specific audience is the judges each week. They’re presenting their fashion to these designers to see if they proceeded in the task they were told to complete.
